A Level Chemistry Qualification Summary
Qualification Overview
This qualification is the Pearson Edexcel A Level Chemistry (Level 3 Advanced GCE), designed to develop learners’ understanding of chemical principles, theories and practical techniques. It builds on GCSE science knowledge and prepares students for further study and careers in chemistry, medicine, engineering and other science-related fields.
Who This Qualification Is For
This qualification is suitable for learners who:
- Have a strong interest in chemistry and scientific investigation
- Enjoy problem-solving, practical work and applying theory to real-world contexts
- Are planning progression to higher education or science-based careers
- Wish to develop advanced analytical, mathematical and laboratory skills
Fees: £8.00 an Hour
Classes: 16:30 to 19:30 (Thursday and Friday) 10:30 to 16:00 (Saturday and Sunday)
Key Areas of Study (A Level Only)
The A Level Chemistry course covers a broad and rigorous range of topics, including:
- Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table – Atomic models, electronic structure and periodic trends
- Bonding and Structure – Ionic, covalent and metallic bonding, intermolecular forces and structure
- Redox Chemistry – Oxidation states, redox reactions and electrochemical principles
- Inorganic Chemistry – Group 1, Group 2 and Group 7 chemistry, transition metals and qualitative analysis
- Physical Chemistry – Amount of substance, energetics, kinetics, equilibria and acid–base chemistry
- Organic Chemistry – Alkanes, alkenes, halogenoalkanes, alcohols, organic synthesis and mechanisms
- Modern Analytical Techniques – Infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and instrumental analysis
The course develops synoptic understanding by linking concepts across different areas of chemistry.
Assessment Structure (A Level)
The qualification is assessed through three externally examined written papers, all taken at the end of the course:
- Paper 1: Advanced Inorganic and Physical Chemistry
Covers core physical chemistry and inorganic chemistry topics. - Paper 2: Advanced Organic and Physical Chemistry
Focuses on organic chemistry, analytical techniques and physical chemistry principles. - Paper 3: General and Practical Principles in Chemistry
Assesses synoptic understanding, data analysis and application of practical skills across all topics.
All papers include a mixture of multiple-choice, short-answer, calculation and extended-response questions.
Practical Skills and Endorsement
Practical work is central to A Level Chemistry. Learners complete a series of core practical activities that develop competence in experimental design, data collection, analysis and evaluation.
Practical competence is reported separately through the Science Practical Endorsement, which is assessed by teachers and externally monitored. The endorsement appears on the learner’s certificate alongside the A Level grade.
Skills Developed
Through this qualification, learners develop:
- Strong chemical knowledge and conceptual understanding
- Mathematical and quantitative skills applied to chemistry
- Practical laboratory techniques and safe working practices
- Analytical thinking, evaluation and problem-solving skills
- Scientific communication and use of appropriate terminology
Progression Opportunities
Successful completion of A Level Chemistry supports progression to:
- Degree-level study in chemistry, medicine, pharmacy, biochemistry and engineering
- Higher apprenticeships and professional training programmes
- Careers in science, healthcare, research, education and industry
Awarding Organisation
This qualification is awarded by Pearson Edexcel, a UK awarding organisation recognised by universities and employers.
