About this Qualification
Qualification Overview
The Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9–1) in Mathematics is designed to equip learners with essential mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding required for further education, employment and everyday life. The qualification promotes logical thinking, problem-solving and the ability to apply mathematics confidently in a wide range of contexts.
Learners who achieve this qualification demonstrate competence in numerical fluency, algebraic reasoning, geometry, statistics and probability, as well as the ability to communicate mathematical ideas clearly and accurately.
Purpose of the Qualification
The purpose of this qualification is to:
- Develop fluent knowledge and understanding of mathematical methods, concepts and techniques.
- Enable learners to apply mathematics to solve problems in both mathematical and real-life contexts.
- Encourage logical reasoning, deduction and the ability to construct mathematical arguments.
- Provide a strong foundation for progression to further academic study, vocational pathways and employment where mathematical skills are essential.
The qualification is aligned with national GCSE requirements and benchmarked against high-performing international education systems to ensure appropriate challenge and rigour.
Who is this Qualification Suitable For?
This qualification is suitable for learners who are:
- Studying at Key Stage 4 or post-16
- Preparing for further or higher education
- Seeking to develop strong numeracy and problem-solving skills
- Requiring a recognised mathematics qualification for progression or employment purposes
Entry Requirements
There are no formal prior learning requirements for this qualification. However, learners are expected to have basic mathematical knowledge and skills consistent with Key Stage 3 Mathematics to access the content effectively.
Fees: £8.00 an Hour
Classes: 16:30 to 19:30 (Thursday and Friday) 10:30 to 16:00 (Saturday and Sunday)
Qualification Structure
The GCSE Mathematics qualification is linear and tiered, offering two levels of entry:
- Foundation Tier – targeting grades 1 to 5
- Higher Tier – targeting grades 4 to 9 (with grade 3 available)
Learners are entered for one tier only and must complete all assessments at the same tier.
The qualification content covers six key areas:
- Number
- Algebra
- Ratio, proportion and rates of change
- Geometry and measures
- Probability
- Statistics
Assessment Methods
The qualification is assessed through:
- Three externally examined written papers at either Foundation or Higher tier
- A combination of calculator and non-calculator assessments
All papers assess a balance of mathematical techniques, reasoning and problem-solving skills.
Skills Developed
Throughout the course, learners will develop the ability to:
- Use and apply standard mathematical techniques accurately
- Reason mathematically and construct logical arguments
- Solve problems in a variety of mathematical and real-world contexts
- Interpret, analyse and communicate mathematical information effectively
- Make connections between different areas of mathematics
Progression Opportunities
Achievement of GCSE Mathematics supports progression to:
- Level 3 qualifications such as A level Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Core Mathematics
- Further study in science, technology, engineering and other numerate disciplines
- Vocational qualifications, apprenticeships and employment requiring strong numeracy skills
This qualification provides learners with transferable mathematical skills that are valuable for further learning, training and the workplace
