About this Qualification

Qualification Overview

The Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9–1) in English Language is designed to prepare learners for further education, employment and everyday communication. The qualification develops learners’ ability to read, write, speak, listen and communicate effectively in a wide range of contexts, both academic and real-life.

Learners who achieve this qualification demonstrate competence in understanding and producing written and spoken English, using appropriate language, structure and conventions for different purposes and audiences.

Purpose of the Qualification

The purpose of this qualification is to:

  • Develop confident, effective readers who can interpret, analyse and evaluate a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts.
  • Enable learners to write clearly, coherently and accurately for different forms, purposes and audiences.
  • Support the development of spoken language skills through formal presentations and discussion.
  • Provide a strong foundation for progression to further academic study, vocational qualifications and employment.

The qualification meets national GCSE requirements and is benchmarked against high-performing education systems to ensure appropriate challenge and rigour.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal prior learning requirements for this qualification. However, learners are expected to have a basic level of literacy in English to access the course content and assessments effectively.

Fees: £8.00 an Hour

Classes: 16:30 to 19:30 (Thursday and Friday) 10:30 to 16:00 (Saturday and Sunday) 

Qualification Structure

The GCSE English Language qualification is linear and consists of:

  • Component 1: Fiction and Imaginative Writing
    Learners analyse unseen 19th-century fiction extracts and produce imaginative writing, demonstrating creativity, accuracy and effective use of language.
  • Component 2: Non-fiction and Transactional Writing
    Learners study and compare unseen 20th- and 21st-century non-fiction texts and complete transactional writing tasks such as articles, letters, reviews or speeches.
  • Spoken Language Endorsement
    Learners complete a prepared spoken presentation in a formal setting, responding to questions and feedback. This component is internally assessed and reported separately as Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Assessment Methods

The qualification is assessed through:

  • Two externally examined written papers assessing reading and writing skills
  • One internally assessed spoken language presentation, externally monitored

Learners are required to complete all assessments in the same examination series.

Throughout the course, learners will develop the ability to:

  • Read fluently and critically, identifying explicit and implicit meanings
  • Analyse language, structure and writers’ techniques
  • Compare ideas and perspectives across texts
  • Write accurately and effectively using appropriate vocabulary, grammar and structure
  • Communicate confidently in spoken Standard English
