A Level Physics Qualification Summary

Qualification Overview

This qualification is the A Level Physics (AQA) specification, designed to develop students’ understanding of fundamental physical principles and their application to real-world contexts. It builds on prior GCSE knowledge and prepares learners for further study in physics, engineering, and related scientific disciplines.

Who This Qualification Is For

This qualification is suitable for learners who:

  • Have a strong interest in understanding how the physical world works
  • Enjoy problem-solving, mathematical reasoning, and practical investigation
  • Are considering progression to higher education or careers in science, engineering, medicine, or technology

Fees: £8.00 an Hour

Classes: 16:30 to 19:30 (Thursday and Friday) 10:30 to 16:00 (Saturday and Sunday)

Key Areas of Study (A Level Only)

Learners study a broad and rigorous curriculum covering both theoretical and practical physics. The A Level content includes:

  • Measurements and Their Errors – Use of SI units, uncertainties, and data analysis
  • Particles and Radiation – Fundamental particles, quantum phenomena, and nuclear structure
  • Waves – Wave properties, interference, diffraction, and refraction
  • Mechanics and Materials – Forces, motion, energy, momentum, and material properties
  • Electricity – Circuits, resistivity, potential dividers, and internal resistance
  • Further Mechanics and Thermal Physics – Circular motion, simple harmonic motion, and thermal processes
  • Fields and Their Consequences – Gravitational, electric, and magnetic fields, capacitance, and electromagnetic induction
  • Nuclear Physics – Radioactivity, nuclear decay, fission, fusion, and safety considerations

Optional Topic (One Chosen):

  • Astrophysics
  • Medical Physics
  • Engineering Physics
  • Turning Points in Physics
  • Electronics

Assessment Structure (A Level)

The A Level Physics qualification is assessed through three written examinations, all taken at the end of the course:

  • Paper 1: Core content including measurements, particles, waves, mechanics, electricity, and periodic motion
  • Paper 2: Thermal physics, fields, and nuclear physics
  • Paper 3: Practical skills and data analysis, plus one optional topic

Each paper assesses a combination of short-answer, long-answer, and multiple-choice questions.

Practical Skills and Endorsement

Practical work is central to this qualification. Learners complete a series of required practical activities that develop experimental techniques, data analysis, and evaluation skills.

Practical competence is reported separately through the Practical Endorsement, assessed by teachers and based on demonstrated laboratory skills.

Skills Developed

Through this qualification, learners develop:

  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills
  • Experimental and investigative techniques
  • Data handling and evaluation abilities
  • Problem-solving and logical reasoning
  • Scientific communication and application of theory to real contexts

Progression Opportunities

Successful completion of A Level Physics supports progression to:

  • University degrees in physics, engineering, astrophysics, medical physics, and related sciences
  • Higher apprenticeships and technical pathways
  • Careers in research, engineering, healthcare, technology, and education

Awarding Organisation

This qualification is awarded by AQA, a leading UK awarding body recognised by universities and employers.
