About this Qualification
Qualification Overview
The Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9–1) in Chemistry is designed to develop learners’ understanding of the substances, reactions and processes that underpin the material world. The qualification builds strong foundations in chemical principles while developing analytical thinking, practical skills and the ability to apply chemistry in everyday and industrial contexts.
Learners who achieve this qualification demonstrate the ability to use chemical knowledge and models, apply mathematical skills, analyse data and evaluate evidence to explain chemical behaviour and processes.
Purpose of the Qualification
The purpose of this qualification is to:
- Develop a secure understanding of key chemical concepts, principles and theories.
- Enable learners to apply chemistry knowledge to solve scientific and real‑world problems.
- Build confidence in practical investigation, data analysis and evaluation.
- Prepare learners for progression to further study in science, engineering, medicine and other STEM-related fields.
The qualification reflects national GCSE requirements and promotes scientific literacy, curiosity and critical thinking.
Who is this Qualification Suitable For?
This qualification is suitable for learners who are:
- Studying at Key Stage 4 or post‑16
- Interested in understanding the chemical basis of materials and reactions
- Planning progression to further education, STEM pathways or technical careers
- Seeking a recognised Chemistry qualification to support academic or career development
Entry Requirements
There are no formal prior learning requirements for this qualification. Learners are expected to have a basic understanding of Key Stage 3 science and mathematics to access the content effectively.
Fees: £8.00 an Hour
Classes: 16:30 to 19:30 (Thursday and Friday) 10:30 to 16:00 (Saturday and Sunday)
Qualification Structure
The GCSE Chemistry qualification is linear and tiered, with assessments available at:
- Foundation Tier (grades 1–5)
- Higher Tier (grades 4–9, with grade 3 available)
Learners must complete all assessments at the same tier.
The subject content is organised into key topic areas, including:
- Key concepts in chemistry
- States of matter and mixtures
- Chemical changes
- Extracting metals and equilibria
- Groups in the periodic table
- Rates of reaction and energy changes
- Fuels and Earth science
- Qualitative and quantitative analysis
- Organic chemistry, polymers and materials
Assessment Methods
The qualification is assessed through:
- Two externally examined written papers
- A mixture of multiple‑choice, short‑answer, calculation and extended‑response questions
- Assessment of knowledge, mathematical application, problem‑solving and scientific reasoning
Calculators may be used in the examinations, where appropriate.
Practical Skills and Working Scientifically
Learners are required to complete a set of mandatory core practical activities. These develop skills in:
- Planning and carrying out investigations
- Making and recording observations and measurements
- Analysing and interpreting data
- Evaluating methods and results
- Using scientific terminology, units and symbols accurately
Knowledge and understanding of these practical activities are assessed in the written examinations.
Skills Developed
Throughout the course, learners will develop the ability to:
- Apply mathematical skills to chemical calculations and data
- Use models and equations to explain chemical reactions and processes
- Analyse experimental results and graphical data
- Communicate scientific ideas clearly and accurately
- Evaluate evidence and draw reasoned conclusions
Progression Opportunities
Achievement of GCSE Chemistry supports progression to:
- A level Chemistry and other Level 3 science qualifications
- Further study in medicine, engineering, pharmacy and applied sciences
- Vocational qualifications, apprenticeships and STEM‑related careers
This qualification equips learners with transferable analytical, practical and problem‑solving skills that are valuable for further study, employment and lifelong learning.
